Forests Galore!
Hiking and Cycling around Marienbad

Marienbad sits between two huge protected forest areas, which are both ideal for outdoor activities.  The Slavkovský Forest is criss-crossed with well-marked and well maintained hiking and cycling trails, as well as being one of the top cross-country skiing destinations west of Prague.  In the wilder, more remote Bohemian Forest you can hike and cycle for tens of kilometres without seeing anyone else.  For gentler walks, Marienbad boasts several shorter trails with various themes.

From Spa to Slope to Spa

When you need a change from the relaxed vibe of Bohemia’s second spa town, snap on skis for a faster pace!  Northwest Bohemia is great for downhill and cross-country skiing and you don’t have to go far to enjoy them.  Marienbad has its very own ski resort within walkable distance of the spa zone and in the right conditions, the Royal Golf Course is given over to cross-country skiers with well-marked trails head off into the Slavkovský Forest.  And what better way to soothe those aching muscles at the end of a day on the slopes than with a relaxing massage.

Castles and Chateaux to discover by bus or train!

In the heart of the Slavkovský Forest you’ll find Bečov nad Teplou, a clifftop castle which is home to the Romanesque reliquary of Saint Maurus, while just north of Marienbad is Kynžvart Chateau where some of Austrian Chancellor Metternich's vast collection are on view.  A little further afield, Loket Castle rises above a bend in the Ohře River and is one of the best medieval castles in the country.  The torture exhibition in the dungeons is particularly memorable, as are the views.

Teplá Monastery – Where it all Began

Some 15km east of Marienbad lies the small town of Teplá, which would be an unremarkable place were it not for the huge monastery to its south.  It was monks from the Teplá Monastery, a major centre of power in West Bohemia for centuries, who decided to establish the Marienbad spa.  The monastery has been undergoing renovation for decades and is well worth a visit for its incredible Baroque library and other interiors.
