Embraced by the dense, cooling forests of West Bohemia, Marienbad has a special place in the Central European spa world. Created from a boggy, inhabited valley in the early 18th century by monks from the nearby monastery, the spa houses of this elegant town soon echoed with the languages of Europe as it drew the prominent and powerful, along with their entourages, to its mineral springs and idyllic surroundings.

The air is so pure here, it is known as a ‘climatic spa’. The air is a healing resource alongside mud and mineral water, which can be experienced in grand Roman baths and modern facilities.

From Kipling to the Kaiser, Goethe to Edward VII, Mariánské Lázně was once a top stop on the European spa circuit. Today, visitors can follow their footsteps in the Writer’s Trail or the numerous hiking trails across the town and forest.

After three decades of heritage-friendly renovation, this confident Czech spa is back to its former glory.

Forests Galore! Hiking and Cycling around Marienbad

Mariánské Lázně sits between two huge protected forest areas, which are both ideal for outdoor activities. The Slavkovský Forest is criss-crossed with well-marked and well maintained hiking and cycling trails, as well as being one of the top cross-country skiing destinations west of Prague.

From Spa to Slope

When you need a change from the relaxed vibe of Bohemia’s second spa town, snap on skis for a faster pace! Northwest Bohemia is great for downhill and cross-country skiing and you don’t have to go far to enjoy them.

Castles and Chateaux to Discover

In the heart of the Slavkovský Forest you’ll find Bečov nad Teplou, a clifftop castle which is home to the Romanesque reliquary of Saint Maurus. Just north of Marienbad is Kynžvart Chateau, where some treasures from the Austrian Chancellor Metternich’s vast collection are on view.

Teplá Monastery – Where it all Began

Some 15km east of Mariánské Lázně lies the small town of Teplá, which would be an unremarkable place were it not for the huge monastery to its south. It was the monks from the Teplá Monastery, a major centre of power in West Bohemia for centuries, who decided to establish Mariánské Lázně.
